On Yagana, he continues to sing in a multitude of languages, but this time shifts towards a more organic musical direction, showcasing his incredible versatility as a vocalist.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis new path can be attributed to the pedigree of the rest of the group – veteran musicians Steve Pringle and Graham Godfrey are key members of Michael Kiwanuka’s band, the latter also performing with Little Simz, Cleo Sol and SAULT, among others.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFurthermore, Tom Dream and Josh Ludlow are electronic artists in their own right – with a number of artistic projects in the works, as well as having performed together as ambient duo Soma World. Nioke sings in Susu, Wolof and Malinke – as he describes the struggle of being separated from one’s family, as well as hustling to support them financially from afar.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs a teenager, Nioke would train his voice by the great river Rio Nunez in Boké, among the remnants of the slave trade, pathways and crumbling buildings being swallowed up by the forest. This recording of 'The Toreadors', a one-off session group, was produced by Ray Nkwe who worked as an independent producer for several different companies and was responsible for organising many African jazz-oriented sessions in the 1970s and early 80s.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOn first hearing the A-side ‘Thembi’ (written by Ray Nkwe) you’ll wonder why you haven't heard this song before, but simultaneously be struck with a sense of instant familiarity. It has a loose floating jazz vibe with echoes of 60's hippy, psychedelic soul-jazz qualities, and elements that remind us of acts such as The Deirdre Wilson Tabac. The vocal deliveries are stunning, hauntingly beautiful, and from a place where it is hard to pinpoint just where this song originates.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe B-side, ‘Gwinyitshe', is also absolute fire. This song has gained more coverage and notoriety among South African music fans \/ collectors and DJ's over the years. It is a deep, pulsing soul-jazz-funk groove with another exceptional vocal performance that is relaxed yet engaging and spiritual, whilst managing to surf the instrumentation to perfection. The vocal deliveries are stunning, hauntingly beautiful, and from a place where it is hard to pinpoint just where this song originates.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe B-side, ‘Gwinyitshe', is also absolute fire. This song has gained more coverage and notoriety among South African music fans \/ collectors and DJ's over the years. Whether it be a remix\/re-edit\/rework, it doesn't matter, what does matter is that it works spectacularly in the club and had people jumping on the stage to dance at the party.
