Wally richardson’s soul guru lp has long been a holy grail for tasteful funk and soul collectors. the 1968 prestige release features clean and immaculately crafted instrumentals led by richardson’s clear guitar tones and the contributions of such heavyweights as richard davis on bass and montego joe on percussion. this fully licensed reissue takes two of the most sought-after cuts on the lp and presents them in 7-inch form in a beautiful color reproduction of the original cover. “monday monday” will be familiar to many, if not for the hypnotic intro groove (here cleanly extended for extra satisfaction) then for the classic melody, courtesy of the mamas and the papas hit. “senor boogaloo,” on the flip, is a slinky guitar workout that builds tremendous dancefloor momentum in the manner of the great prestige soul.
